Alexandria, VA – The Airport
Consultants Council (ACC) presented former Transportation Security
Administration (TSA) Administrator Edmund S. “Kip” Hawley
the prestigious 2009 ACC Aviation Award of Excellence at a luncheon on
November 10, 2009 in Lake Las Vegas, NV. This award recognizes the
contributions of an individual or group that are visionary and
innovative, have advanced the airport and aviation industry, and have
served the public in the process. The lifetime achievements of the
recipients are also considered.
"Kip is a most deserving recipient of
this award,” said ACC President Paula Hochstetler. “He is
responsible for significant improvements to the security of our
nation’s aviation system. Under his watch, the TSA’s
Transportation Sector Network Management (TSNM) office was created with
the purpose of developing security policy and working with aviation
stakeholders. TSNM has dramatically improved the interface between TSA,
the ACC membership and other important stakeholders in the private
sector of the aviation industry.”
As the TSA Administrator from 2005
through 2009, Hawley had a number of notable achievements, including
carrying out Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Michael
Chertoff’s risk-based approach to security in the transportation
sector. In 2008, Hawley initiated Checkpoint Evolution, the most
significant change to passenger screening since the 9/11 terrorist
attacks and since the checkpoint was first established in the
1970’s.
Hawley earned a J.D. Degree from the
University of Virginia Law School and a B.A. from Brown University. His
career extends to both the public and private sector, working in the
Administrations of President Ronald Reagan, President George Herbert
Walker Bush to the National Commission of Intermodal Transportation. He
has also worked for private sector companies including Arzoon, Skyway
and Union Pacific. His work at the TSA began with its implementation as
a part of the U.S. Department of Transportation in 2001.
The 2009 ACC Awards Committee chair and
vice chair were Woodie Woodward with Woodward & Associates, and
Gloria Bender of TransSolutions, respectively.
